The Caponier

The Caponier at fort Amherst defended two sections of ditch around Amherst Redoubt via musket loops and it also linked Prince of Wales bastion to the Redoubt.

Inside it has two sets of steps leading up to the Prince of Wales bastion, the exits are both blocked and the Prince of Wales bastion is now a tennis club. On the other side there is a sloping passage up to the Amherst Redoubt, this exit is also blocked and the Redoubt is now Army housing.

There are several other chambers inside, one of them was a magazine or armoury.

The caponier seen from the ditch. the hole now used as an entrance into the caponier was originally a vent.
